Painful menstruation fall into two groups: Primary Dysmenorrea and Secondary Dysmenorrea. Primary dysmenorrea occurs around the time that menstrual periods first begin in otherwise healthy young women. This pain is not usually related to a specific problem. Secondary dysmenorrea is menstrual pain that develops later, in women who have had normal periods and it is often related to problems in the uterus or other pelvic organs such as, endometriosis, fibroids, PMS, sexually transmitted diseases and/or stress and anxiety.
